July 2009 – G8 influence and effects of climate change
G8 and climate change
In July, international climate change talks take a brief detour out of the U.N. process to the Major Economies Forum, to be held just after the G-8 summit in Italy.
In Italy, leaders from the world’s wealthiest countries will seek to move the process forward. A successful result from Italy will give momentum to the series of UN talks set for later in the year.
Effects of climate change
If you are on this mailing list you already know that climate change is one of the most important and difficult problems of our age. Without action, the future is likely to see an increase in floods and drought, mass migration, falling agricultural production and most likely other horrors we cannot yet imagine.
International climate change negotiations are among the most powerful tools available to help the world to slow changes to the climate and to adapt to the changes that may be inevitable. As the process strives to reach an agreement for a new international framework at the end of the year in Copenhagen, Climate-Change.tv has been and will be there: bringing dozens of short and incisive interviews with policymakers, scientists, environmentalists and expert observers to a curious public, all free of charge.
If you are not already familiar with Climate-Change.tv, I invite you to browse the site. You can start from the link at the bottom right of this newsletter.
Also, listen to the recent interview linked to here from Yvo de Boer, the United Nations’ top climate change official, who talks about what will happen in the climate change process over the six months before Copenhagen.
