Kelly Rigg of the tcktcktck campaign and Executive Director of the GCCA says that if we do not commit to a 1.5% reduction in global temperature rise, we are consigning a significant number of countries to oblivion. She says in most of the developed countries “There is an appetite for change”. She discusses the US$500 million fossil-fuel lobbyists have invested to defeat climate change legislation. She explains how civil society influence at the negotiations is overrated; she sees it as a place to hold governments accountable, but that action on the ground back home is still important and that more needs to be done. She says there is a disconnect between what is happening at home and what is said at the negotiations.

CARE International has been working on a Community-Based Mangrove Reforestation and Management Project in Vietnam, following the devastation caused by Typhoon Damrey in 2005. A belt of mangrove forests played an essential role in protecting one district by preventing soil erosion and enabling the dykes to slow down the force of the storm waves. This video shows how planting and sustainable management of extensive mangrove areas are key to protecting vulnerable communities from the physical and economic impacts of disasters.
