Chandrashekhar Dasgupta, Ambassador and Distinguished Fellow for The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) says we urgently need a massive leap in technology and “a transformation of the current energy order”. He discusses the technology needs of developing countries and the current state of play. He identifies what needs to happen in terms of technology transfer and development, saying Annex I countries need to speed up their mitigation.

UNDP’s Lucy Wanjiru introduces the Women’s Green Business Initiative – aiming to accelerate economic growth and reduce poverty. The project is run by the UNDP and to be funded by the Japanese government. In its initial stages, she hopes funding will get off the ground soon, so work can start in August/September.

Sam Bickersteth, Chief Executive of the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) introduces this one-year-old network. Funded by the British and Dutch governments, it exists to advise policymakers in developing countries. He gives case study examples from the Punjab and Rwanda, outlining what will decide whether or not they are successful.

He talks about the planning they are doing around the slums, and the impacts of climate change, especially flooding which makes this essential. He illustrates their adaptation measures further referring to their mangrove planting project, funded by ICLEI. He finishes on analysing how to empower and engage the public.

Special Envoy for Climate Change at the World Bank, Andrew Steer, discusses their latest report on cities in north Africa, looking at Tunis, Casablanca and Alexandria, and their handbook on City Management. He explains how the report is in part written by the cities, and how they therefore own it and will act on it. He puts forward suggestions around how to improve the mention of cities within the text of the treaty.

He says it is the fastest growth in emissions in the developing world, but they are looking at a principle of “Avoid, shift and improve” for local and national transport systems.
