Hans message at COP21 is to tell the world that it is possible to decouple economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. The Nordic Council have demonstrated this is possible in the last 20 years. They have achieved significant economic growth and stable or reduced emissions even taking into account the carbon footprint of products produced abroad for Nordic consumption. Hans explains energy efficiency is the most cost effective way to achieve this decoupling and that a conversion from fossil fuels to renewable energy is essential. Nordic countries have made this possible by having strong policy frameworks in place and well developed grid connections. Hans thinks the Nordic region is the first region to really establish a cross border coordination dealing with these issues.
