Rio+20: Is technology slowing down the negotiations process?

Rio+20 (13/06/2012) Langston Goree, Director IISD Reporting Services says some technologies are slowing down the negotiation process – mainly overheard projectors which allow changes made by countries to be automatically seen and debated rather than 20 years ago when the chair would listen, reformulate and feed back into the talks and secondly the mobile phone which allows countries to be in constant contact with their capitals and gives them less latitude than they might once have been given.

However, he hopes the technology they use – which allows the IISD reports to be accessed online and on mobile phones – will not slow down the process but will help to reduce the paper waste and carbon footprint of their reporting.
