Igbokwe Ugochukwu J., programs officer, Smallholders Foundation, Nigeria, interview: Rio Conventions Pavilion, CBD COP11, 13/10/2012 – Igbokwe Ugochukwu J., programs officer, Smallholders Foundation, says Nigeria is richly blessed but agriculture has always been done by rural farmers. He says there has not been a mechanisation of agriculture like in other African countries adding that the government is “apathetic” towards farmers.
Ugochukwu says biodiversity loss and climate change are affecting yields and incomes for many small farmers. His organisation helps them to adapt and mitigate in response to these challenges as well as providing advice, price data, microfinance and even a 22-episode radio drama about climate change.
