CBD COP11: Empowering communities is key to conservation

Rio Conventions Pavilion TV, CBD COP11 (18/10/2012) – Tamas Marghescu, Director General of CIC, announces and explains the results of his organisation’s award for sustainable use of nature in conservation.

Marghescu explains that the awards are given to the best projects in which sustainable use of nature contributes to conservation. He expresses his hope that this inspires replication of these successful projects.

Marghescu reveals that Namibia has won this year’s award for its successful wildlife policy which empowers communities to manage their own resources. He states that income from this management is then made available to these communities for further conservation or for healthcare or education.

Marghescu also describes the winner of last year’s award, a Pakistani project in which a species on the brink of extinction was brought back to sustainable levels.
