COP20 (11/12/14) – Bianca Jagger talks about her work with indigenous people at COP 20. She discusses the hopes she had for progress on indigenous people’s issues, particularly REDD+, at the Lima talks. However she feels we have seen no progress and points to the recent killing of indigenous leaders in Peru and Ecuador as indicative of the failure of leaders to protect indigenous rights. She details the struggles of indigenous peoples across South America and contrasts this with the lack of action on relevant issues at COP 20. She describes how the issues of climate change and indigenous people’s rights are interlinked and interdependent and discusses what leaders in South America and around the world need to do to protect the rights of indigenous peoples.
