Rio Conventions Pavilion TV, CBD COP11 (18/10/2012) – T. O. Ramachandran, Secretary of Comtrust Eye Care Society & Member of OISCA, discusses the importance of preserving India’s wetlands.
Ramachandran explains that India’s wetlands are diminishing due to population pressure and few people know quite how severe a problem this is.
Ramachandran stresses that as well as the usual ecosystem services provided by wetlands, mangroves in particular have an extremely important function, both sequestering carbon in the soil and lessening the impact of tsunamis.
Ramachandran finishes by putting forward his proposal for a participatory management programme for India’s wetlands.
