COP20: Randy Ramadhar, Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs

COP20 (04/12/14) – Ramadhar explains that Trinidad and Tobago is a carbon giant in the Caribbean and West Indies region as they are the sixth largest producer of Liquefied Natural Gas in the world by export from a single site. The government are hoping to integrate renewable energy into the country but recognize it will be challenging. Ramadhar explains that the renewable transition will require government leadership but first an enabling environment is needed. Renewables will be more expensive than fossil fuels in Trinidad and Tobago and therefore a free will buy in from citizens is imperative. The Ministry view education and awareness as key to make renewables more accessible, realistic and affordable.
