Volker Liebig, ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes

Professor Doctor Liebig highlights the increasing importance of space-based data in understanding the impacts of climate change. His expectations for the negotiations are to see an agreement that results in a reduction in carbon dioxide and the implementation of a monitoring system. He explains that in the next 2 years Europe will be launching a space observation monitoring system that can observe impacts such as deforestation. He would like to see investment for the project so that a carbon dioxide monitoring component can be added. The project uses free and open data, which is important for developing country scientists to be able to access so they can strengthen science bases in their country.
