CBD COP11: Sri Lankan indigenous knowledge furthers sustainability

Rio Conventions Pavilion, CBD COP11 (11/10/2012) – Damayanthi Godamulla, Chairman and CEO of the Community Development Centre (Sri Lanka) and her colleagues discuss their organisation’s work using indigenous knowledge to conserve ecosystems in Sri Lanka.

Godamulla describes their project cultivating 61 species of yam without fertiliser or pesticide so as to avoiding soil degradation. She describes their use of sustainable agriculture techniques inspired by indigenous knowledge.

A colleague of Godamulla continues explaining that the indigenous knowledge she acquired from her father has proved very useful when working on sustainable development.
