COP18: Gender equality could increase agricultural yields, says UNCCD

COP18 (05/12/12) – Sergio Zelaya-Bonilla, Policy Advocacy on Global Issues and Platforms for the UNCCD talks about the importance on the links between gender and agriculture.

While he says the UNFCCC is catching up with other conventions on gender he believes that an optimal solution for the UNCCD would have been an agreement on gender and agriculture.

She says that women possess the traditional knowledge needed to build climate smart agricultural systems but that legally they are still not on a legal footing with men. He cites a report from the FAO that shows better Gender rights could improve agricultural yields by 4%.
