COP18 (05/12/12) – Marcin Korolec, Minster for the Environment, Poland, talks about the COP18 conference as the bridge between the Kyoto Protocol and the new deal for 2020.
He says he hopes to see negotiations finish on the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and that next year in Warsaw, the real work can begin on the new agreement.
He says that there is a sense of frustration that only a few countries are willing to make real efforts and sign up to Kyoto for a second commitment period but that he hopes a new deal, which covers the whole global community can build on that.
He stresses that Poland were able to surpass their emissions reduction target under the Kyoto Protocol while still increasing the country’s economic development. He says this is a good argument for why Poland should host next year’s climate talks.
