COP19: Lucy Wanjiru Njagi on women and gender

COP19 (19/11/13) – Lucy Wanjiru Njagi from the United Nations Development Programme talks about the importance of women in decision making related to climate change.

She says that women have a different role to men that makes them more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as well as the ones with the best knowledge of issues regarding the environment.

Women are often in roles and positions where they have to take care of the environment, fetch water and wood for fire as well as small scale farming. Their indigenous skills should be drawn upon when making decisions. Women should have a seat at the table and have input into decisions. Women should also have equitable access to resources, technologies and financing to cope with the impacts of climate change.
