Rio+20: The benefits of energy access in Ghana

Rio+20 (15/06/2012) –Kassim Gawusu, Executive Director of Greener Impact International talks about the importance of engaging youth in sustainable development and the organisations plan to take what they learn in Rio back to Ghana and share it at a youth conference.

He talks of the organisations main objectives of environment protection, education and the promotion of renewable energy and stresses that reliable energy is a major tool in sustainable development for those in Ghana, around 28%, who still have no access to grid energy.

For these communities, Gawusu says, energy can mean access to education, better health by replacing kerosene lamps with solar lamps and households having more money to invest in health care and the education of their children. The group is currently planning a solar lamp distribution project that they hope will also earn carbon credits under the CDM.
