COP19: Dina Ionesco on importance of migration during UN climate talks

COP19 (15/11/13) – Dina Ionesco from the International Organization for Migration talks about the importance of migration in the context of climate change.

She says that their objective is to put migration on to the climate agenda and that is why her organisation is at these talks.

Climate change has an impact on people’s mobility and people’s mobility also has an impact on climate change. From a human, social and economic point of view migration is at the heart of the UN climate talks. Displacement of people is increasingly a big issue with environmental degradation becoming a big reason why people are moving.

They see two gateways in bringing migration to the table at these talks. The first is through national adaptation plans whilst the other is the highly controversial loss and damage discussions.
