COP19: Christoph Frei – can we cut our emissions by 2050?

COP19 (16/11/2013) – Christoph Frei, Secretary General, World Energy Council talks about the role of the Council at the UN Climate Talks. He says its role involves ensuring that its work is made clear to ministers and also setting straight myths that exist regarding climate change.

On the myth of whether we will be able to cut our emissions by 2050 to remain under 2°C, he says it will only take strong leadership and innovation, in order for this to be achieved.

He says, with the current leadership, policies and technologies, he cannot see us achieving this goal by 2050.

The World Energy Council, says Frei, has outlined a number of action areas to address but that it is critical for governments to come with a balanced approach.

He says we need to focus our innovation efforts in areas such as electric storage and carbon capture if we are to get closer to achieving our goal.
