COP19: Shaban Mawanda on Ugandan Red Cross in local community

COP19 (14/11/13) – Shaban Mawanda from the Ugandan Red Cross talks about the work they are doing with local communities.

He says that the Ugandan Red Cross has a mandate to mobilise communities to be aware of disaster management. The Red Cross looks at the whole cycle of disaster and how climate change fits into that cycle so it is important that communities take part in these discussions.

Uganda has suffered from extreme weather events like a flood in 2007 and a landslide in 2010. People are becoming aware of the link between these events and climate change. He hopes that the Ugandan Red Cross can contribute to efforts by working with local communities on lower level initiatives to help them become resilient.
