Fridt Jof F. Unander, Research Council of Norway

Fridt introduces a recent initiative by 20 countries including Norway, China and US to double investment in research and development within the next five years. It is hoped this will mobilise scientists and developers to develop breakthrough technologies to help solve the climate challenge. Fridt believes finance mechanisms are vital in helping new technologies reach commercialisation and global markets. He thinks finance will need to be allocated to developing countries to implement new technologies if they are to also benefit from this. Norway is a big producer and exporter of oil and when asked about the controversy of this, Fridt tells Climate Home that oil generates a lot of the money for the state that can be spend on supporting new technologies and the important thing is how Norway spends its income in solving the climate challenge
